MADISON, WI (WTAQ) – Democratic Governor Tony Evers is vetoing Assembly Bill 173, which is one of many similar measures proposed by Republican-led Legislatures across the country.
Assembly Bill 173 would prohibit the acceptance of private grants or donations for election administration and prohibits state agencies, counties, and municipalities from entering into a contract related to election administration that includes any requirement governing election administration or the transfer of any duties related to administration to a person who doesn’t have that authority under state law.
This has been a hot topic in Green Bay, as several residents filed an election complaint against the city earlier this year.
In a veto letter, Evers said:
“I am vetoing this bill because I object to restrictions on local governments potentially using supplemental funding for election administration. During the coronavirus pandemic, our state and local election officials performed admirably to ensure the 2020 elections in each of our communities were conducted freely, fairly, and in accordance with our election laws.”
