The popular fast-food chain joins other restaurants such as Burger King, Carl’s Jr., and White Castle with the release of a new plant-based Spicy Black Bean Burger in select restaurants across the country. The vegan burger was released earlier this week topped with tomatoes, sliced onions, lettuce, jalapenos, and the option of pepper jack cheese and spicy chipotle sauce.
Even though the burger is completely vegan friendly, Wendy’s won’t be marketing the new option as plant-based because of the risk of cross-contamination on the grill if it comes in contact with real meat. Wendy’s first released a plant-based burger back in 2015 when Steve-O from MTV asked the restaurant to work on their meatless burger options.
The company plans to evaluate how the burger does at three stores in Ohio, Florida, and Pennsylvania before offering the new menu item to more locations.
