FORT MCCOY, WI (WTAQ-WRN) — Senator Ron Johnson says the U-S has an obligation to help Afghan refugees who wish to come this country “for the right reasons.” But, following a briefing by officials at Wisconsin’s Fort McCoy, the Wisconsin Republican also raised concerns.
“Who do you think the Taliban is letting through the gates of the Kabul airport? Just ask yourself that question. And that’s what I’m asking the folks here on the ground to ask themselves that same question too, and be on guard for that possibility,” he said during a Wednesday press conference.
Johnson described the Biden administration’s evacuation of Afghans as chaotic and disorganized, and said he was told at least some of the refugees at Fort McCoy have no form of identification.
“I share that heartfelt desire to bring people out that are our allies, that are in danger, and bring them here safely,” Johnson said. “But at the same time because this wasn’t pre-planned, this wasn’t organized, that we have such chaos now, we have to understand that there is a danger to this country.”
Johnson, who was accompanied by a group of Republican state legislators, said they were told some of the approximately one-thousand Afghans who’ve arrived at the base so far lack any form of ID.
