WASHINGTON, DC (WSAU) — Longtime Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett has been nominated as the US Ambassador to the micro-state of Luxembourg.
The White House announced the appointment on Wednesday. In a statement, Barrett said he’s honored to be considered for the job and looks forward to serving.
Barrett’s appointment still requires Senate confirmation. Until then, he plans to continue serving as Mayor of Milwaukee.
Barrett has been a mainstay in the Wisconsin Democratic party for decades, serving in both the State Senate and Assembly and also serving five terms in the US House of Representatives. He’s been Mayor of Milwaukee since 2004 and has previously run for Governor.
Luxembourg is located between Germany and France and is one of the smallest countries in the European Union at just under 1,000 square miles in size. The capital, Luxembourg City, is one of four official capitals of the EU.
