FORT MCCOY, WI (WSAU) — Wisconsin will be home to 399 Afghan refugees as part of the first round of resettlement stemming from the evacuation of thousands following the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan.
A source with knowledge of the situation gave those details to ABC affiliate 27 News in Madison on Wednesday, saying the first group will involve some 37,000 re-settlements with California taking in the most at over 5,000. A handful of states and Washington, DC will not take any.
Details of the resettlement remain vague, such as if any of the refugees currently housed at Fort McCoy will be among those staying in the Badger State. More than 8,000 refugees are being housed at the base near Tomah.
Earlier this summer a group of Religious leaders in Wausau announced they were teaming up with a resettlement agency to bring some refugees to the area, though they don’t expect that will happen until sometime in 2022.
