MADISON, WI (WSAU) — Statues that were damaged during demonstrations that followed the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis have been restored to the State Capitol grounds in Madison.
Protesters tore down both the “Forward” statue, which honors Wisconsin’s state motto, and one of Civil War soldier Hans Christian Heg, who fought for the Union and was a noted anti-slave activist.
Repairs to the statues cost around $80,000- the bulk of which was paid for by Federal grants. The remainder was paid for by insurance money and donations that were made to the State Historical Society.
Workers re-installed the statues on Tuesday.
