MADISON, WI (WSAU) — The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has set the 2021 Fall Wolf Harvest quota at 130 wolves.
The Department announced Monday that trappers will be authorized to harvest 74 wolves within the state’s six established hunting zones, and the Ojibwe Tribe will be able to take 56 within the Ceded Territory.
Those interested in applying for a license to trap wolves can do so now. The state plans to issue 370 licenses, five times the number of wolves to be harvested by the public. Those who win the lottery for a license will be notified by October 25th, at which time they will have the chance to purchase a license.
Plans currently call for the season to open on November 6th.
The Chippewa Tribe has filed a suit against the wolf hunt- saying it violates their treaty rights because they consider the animal to be sacred. A judge will hear that case later this month, which could stop the November hunt.
The gray wolf was taken off the protected species list earlier this year, after which the state held a special spring hunt. The DNR set a quota of 119 animals for that hunt, but hunters took nearly twice that amount.
