GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Governor Tony Evers says he isn’t overly worried about Aaron Rodgers’ stance on vaccinations.
“I don’t fuss about it that much,” said Evers, making an appearance at Wisconsin Democrats’ one-year to win re-election event in Green Bay. “He made his decisions and I do think some of the data he was using might not be quite as accurate as he hoped, but it is what it is.”
Rodgers spoke at length about his decision to not get vaccinated against COVID-19 in an interview on the “Pat McAfee Show” on Friday.
“If the vaccine is so great, then how come people are still getting COVID and spreading COVID and unfortunately dying from COVID?” said Rodgers.
Given Rodgers’ platform, Evers says some of his comments are concerning. However, the governor doesn’t expect the quarterback to keep pushing his beliefs.
“I just don’t think he’s got the time or effort to be a spokesperson for not getting vaccinations,” said Evers. “I will continue to do that and hopefully he’ll continue to play football at a high level.”
Rodgers says he won’t be encouraging people on vaccines either way.
“I think you should do what’s the best interest of your body,” said Rodgers on the radio show.
Outside of the Brown County Democrats’ office, opponents of Evers lined the street. Some admit they used to not be fans of Rodgers either.
“I have not been supporting the Packers for a while now because of the not coming out for the National Anthem, but when he did what he did yesterday, he’s got 100% my support from me now,” said Brenda Belanger of Oconto.
The protesters say Evers should factor in Rodgers’ comments as vaccine mandates are considered.
“He didn’t take the vaccine,” Belanger said of Rodgers. “He stood up for his rights. We have a constitutional right. We don’t have to take that vaccine. Kudos to him for not taking it.”
Evers has not issued any mandates. However, he has required state employees to test for COVID if they haven’t submitted proof of vaccination.
