WAUKESHA, WI (WSAU) — The toll from Waukesha’s Christmas Parade tragedy is five dead and 40 injured, though that may change.
Police say a driver plowed through the parade yesterday afternoon. Several videos show the chaos as the man’s SUV runs through the crowd. Members of the Xtreme Dance group, the Dancing Grannies dance troupe, and Waukesha South High School’s marching band were all hit.
At least 12 children were hurt.
Waukesha Police Chief Dan Thompson says they have a ‘person of interest’ in custody, but he’s not saying why the suspect drove through the parade.
The holiday parade in Waukesha came to an abrupt end after a red SUV broke through police barriers and sped down the parade route, with some parade-goers reporting there may have been shots fired in the incident.
A live stream of the parade from the City of Waukesha’s Facebook page showed a marching band coming down the street, followed by some honks and a speeding red vehicle. Several gasps and shouts from the crowd could be heard in the 15-second clip, followed by a police officer running down the route.
This was recorded from the City of Waukesha’s Facebook account, which was streaming the parade.
