MADISON, WI (WTAQ) — We’re now 19 months into the COVID-19 pandemic, and people are tired.
During a Wednesday press briefing, state officials acknowledged this before launching into a familiar refrain.
“I’m going to sound like a broken record, but the science is clear,” said Governor Tony Evers before urging Wisconsinites to get vaccinated, wear masks indoors, and socially distance.
Governor Evers was asked about people burnt out on the pandemic and returning to their normal lives during a press conference on Wednesday.
“Returning to their former lives can work,” Evers said in response to a question posed by WTAQ. “We’re talking about encouraging people, when they’re indoors, to mask up keep socially distant, or be with people that they know all are vaccinated.”
The most recent Gallup poll on the issue, however, shows that the majority of Americans are looking to lead their normal lives without any interruption to their work and business. The same polls show that a majority of Americans are no longer worried about the virus.
Evers and health officials also urged Wisconsinites to keep their holiday gatherings small.
“If we truly care about our neighbors, and the fact that our hospitals in the Green Bay area are reaching their limit, it’s time to do the right thing,” said Evers.
Evers also asked local politicians to push for vaccinations. 59.2% of Wisconsinites have had at least one dose of the vaccine.
