GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) — There’s something a little different about this Super Bowl Sunday in Wisconsin.
For the first time, Wisconsinites don’t need to cross state lines to place a legal wager on the NFL Championship Game. In fact, for Green Bay residents it only takes a trip down the street.
The Oneida Nation Casino is closing out its first season with a legal sportsbook after amending its gaming agreement with the state to allow betting on professional and some college sporting events as well as major entertainment award shows.
For now, the facility offers about two dozen betting kiosks that allow customers to place bets, but they are planning a Las Vegas-style sports lounge that will allow bettors to place their wager and also watch games on numerous big screens.
Other Tribes are in the process of negotiating a similar agreement with the state. Next up is the Turtle Lake Casino near the Wisconsin/Minnesota border, run by the St. Croix Chippewas. They are expected to open their book as soon as the Department of the Interior signs off on their proposal. That facility is expected to bring in big business from the Twin Cities, as sports betting remains illegal in Minnesota.
The Potawatomi are also looking to offer the service in the Milwaukee area.
