MADISON, WI (WSAU) – There would be a mandatory minimum jail sentence for repeat-offender shoplifters under a bill that’s headed to Governor Ever’s desk.
Those convicted of a third shoplifting offense would face at least 180 days behind bars. Habitual shoplifters could get between 9-months to a maximum of 10-years depending on the value of stolen goods.
The bill comes after a series of high-profile shoplifting incidents at upscale stores in California and other parts of the country. The District Attorneys in some cities have not been prosecuting shoplifting cases unless the goods taken are worth a certain amount.
There have also been other organized grab-and-run incidents at high-end retailers in the Milwaukee suburbs.
Opponents of the Wisconsin bill say it will give judges fewer sentencing options based on individual circumstances and will lead to jail overcrowding.
Governor Evers hasnt’ said publicly if he’ll sign the bill or veto it.
