WAUKESHA, WI (WSAU) — The defense team for the man accused of killing six people and injuring dozens more during the Waukesha Chrismas Parade is asking to delay the trial into next year.
Attorneys for Darrell Brooks Jr say they have a mountain of evidence to work through, and they don’t expect they will be ready in time for the start of the trial on October 3rd.
Judge Jennifer Dorow didn’t rule out the possibility of a delay during a hearing on Tuesday, giving the defense until Friday to file for one. She then scheduled another hearing for Monday, April 4th.
Brooks faces multiple counts of homicide and recklessly endangering safety from the incident. He’s accused of driving his SUV into the parade route, ignoring barricades and verbal warnings from police who were securing the parade route.
Dorow is also considering a change of venue motion and has acknowledged that she does know the family of one of the victims from last November’s incident but has promised to remain neutral if the case is not moved out of Waukesha County.
