WAUKESHA, WI (WSAU) — The defense team for Darrell Brooks Jr. was denied their request to delay their client’s homicide trial into 2023 on Monday.
Instead Judge Jennifer Dorow said she would be willing to give the defense another three to four weeks to review the discovery in the case, but not the several months they were requesting.
As of Tuesday the trial is still scheduled to begin October 3rd and run through the 28th. Two motion hearings will be held this summer- June 20th and August 26th.
Brooks, the man accused of plowing his SUV through the Waukesha Christmas Parade route last November, is facing six counts of fist-degree intentional homicide and dozens of counts of recklessly endangering safety. His lawyers have been asking for the delay so they can process numerous videos of the incident and analyze the speed of the SUV as it was moving through the parade.
Not decided on Monday was a request for a change of venue in the case. That could come up as part of June’s hearing, and could also impact when the trial is held if it is moved out of Waukesha County.
