DE PERE, WI (WTAQ) – On Tuesday, President Joe Biden called Russia’s actions in Ukraine a ‘genocide,’ only intensifying rhetoric surrounding the invasion.
Democratic Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin stopped for an event in De Pere on Thursday, where WTAQ News asked about her reaction to the comment. While she didn’t explicitly agree with the president’s statement, Baldwin says something has to be done to help.
“We must continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with the people of Ukraine,” Baldwin said. “We have to rally all of our allies in Europe, in NATO, and the entire free world to this cause – to supply Ukrainians with defensive weapons they need to repel this invasion.”
Baldwin pointed out that Ukraine not being a NATO nation makes the conflict complicated, and somewhat isolates them from receiving certain protections or levels of aid. When asked if the U.S. would need to put boots on the ground, Baldwin says it’s important to be careful dealing with Russia and Putin’s unpredictable nature.
“We have to avoid World War III and the possibility of a nuclear war,” Baldwin said. “[But] it’s absolutely necessary that we investigate the war crimes that we are seeing unfold in Ukraine and hold Putin accountable by isolating him from the rest of the free world.”
