CHIPPEWA FALLS, WI (WSAU) — A ten-year-old girl who went missing in the Chippewa Falls area on Sunday has been found dead, and police are opening a homicide investigation into the incident.
According to a press release Iliana M. Peters, who goes by the name Lily, had taken her bicycle to visit her Aunt on Sunday. Her family was expecting her to be home early in the evening, but by 9 PM she hadn’t arrived.
Her father contacted the Police who combed the area around the homes but found no sign of her. Then after dark, a bike matching hers was found near the Lienkugles’ Brewery parking lot.
K9 Officers were brought in to search the area on Sunday, and officers also deployed drone technology but so far there’s been no sign of Peters. All of those crews are back at it today as well, with officers also searching the area of Duncan Creek on foot.
Officers found a body along Duncan Creek Monday morning. By mid-morning, the Chippewa County Coroner confirmed that the deceased girl was Peters.
Officers are following some leads and say at this time but they are asking for additional help. those with tips are asked to call a newly-established tip line at 1-800-263-5906.
Because there is no suspect in custody officers are asking the public to be vigilant, saying there could be a danger to the public at this time. No further information is going to be released, as the investigation is in its very early stages.
The Leinie Lodge has been shut down today while investigators work. A mobile command post has also been established in the area.
