For the second straight year, the Green Bay Packers first round draft choice hails from the University of Georgia. With the 22nd choice overall, General Manager Brian Gutekunst selected inside linebacker Quay Walker from the national champion Bulldogs, a year after bringing defense back Eric Stokes on board in the first round from Athens.
Walker is 6-4, 245 pounds and anchored one of the best defensive units in the country last year. In 15 starts he piled up 67 tackles, recording 11 tackles for loss, 5 sacks and 15 quarterback hits during his four year career.
His length and sideline to sideline speed allowed him to cover tight ends and even backs in the passing game and he’s expected to team up with De’Vondre Campbell in the middle of the Pack’s second level defense.
After a big run on wide receivers in the first round, the top six were taken in the first 18 selections, Gutekunst turned his attention to the defensive side of the ball and and got a strong player in both the run and pass game to add to the team’s ascending defensive unit.
