CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) – I’m firmly rooted in reality. And, in this modern everything-goes world, it’s a handicap.
Here are two seemingly unrelated stories that show us that we are rapidly approaching the end of reality: things in the real world are never as they seem. We are told to close our eyes, turn off our logic, and see things differently.
First, Rikers Island – it’s the hell-on-earth New York City jail. And in this no-bail, revolving-door justice system, you have to be a notorious criminal to be incarcerated there. One of the inmates at Rikers is Harvey Marceline, who was paroled in 1999 for a murder and is now accused of killing again. Only these days he identifies as Merceline Harvey – a woman. He is a biological male, but he is housed with biological females. And now he stands accused of raping a female inmate.
New Jersey has a similar jail absurdity. They have 27 biological male inmates who self-identify as women. One is about to become a father – twice – because he gets to bunk with female inmates.
And then there is Akihiko Kondo from Japan. He’s a 38 year old who identifies as a “ficto-sexual” – someone who is in love with fictional characters. He got married to Hatsune Miku, a computer generated blue-haired hologram. But now the marriage is on the rocks, because the software company that programmed Hatsume has gone out of business. So she can no longer talk or sing to him.
You think this is absurd? Really? Mark Zuckerberg thinks happiness for humankind likes in his metaverse… an online world. He even changed the name of his company to Meta.
My message to you today is simple. Hold onto reality, with both hands. There’s lot of space for you. More and more people are leaving the real world, imagining what isn’t, is. I’m glad to be left behind.
