WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI (WSAU) — Former Marshfield City Clerk Susan Carlson was in court on Monday where Wood County Judge Nicholas Brazeau Jr. determined there is probable cause and moved the case forward to arraignment.
Court records show funds went missing from 2015 to 2020 and that most of the missing funds were cash payments. Carlson was also questioned about activity from her bank account.
Carlson is accused of three counts of theft in a business setting of more than $10,000. Investigators say the missing funds included traffic tickets that were supposed to be turned over to the city finance department, but never made it.
As many as $70,000 may have been taken during that time. City Administrator Steve Barg has said that the city does have insurance to cover such losses, and will be filing a claim.
Barg added that the municipal clerk’s position operates outside the view of the City Administration by design to minimize possible interference. Instead, the position reports directly to the municipal judge. He previously called the situation “a failure in the supervision of the former municipal clerk’s duties by the Judge.”
The case had been scheduled for arraignment on Monday, though Carlson did not enter a plea. She returns to court on May 26th.
