SCHOFIELD, WI (WSAU) — The Schofield City Council voted on Tuesday to approve the move of City Hall from its current location on Park Street to the city’s Public Works Building on Alderson Street but provided no timeline for when that would happen.
“It’s going to take quite a while to get everything organized,” said Mayor Kregg Hoehn. “We don’t have any dates yet, but keep it in mind.”
Hoehn says for now that means residents should be aware that the move is coming, but for now, everything remains status quo and all business will still be conducted in the current building. “Come here to do the things that you’d normally do, and we’ll let you know what’s going on [in the future.]”
Alders Joan Joss, Dennis Richmond, and Kristin Conway provided the “no” votes in the 5-3 decision. Joss doing so despite voting for the move during last Thursday’s Public Property Committee meeting.
Joss noted that should the current property become a multi-family residential development it would come with traffic congestion issues given there is only one road into and out of the property. She and others on the council also shared concerns about moving City Hall into an industrial area with frequent truck and semi traffic, and what it would take to remodel the current building to resemble what a City Hall should look like.
Hoehn said the next steps will involve drawing up plans including a facade for the new space, and putting those plans out for bids.
As for the RFPs for the land Public Works Director Mark Thuot says he was contacted directly by at least one group that intends to bid, but since the request remains open through the end of July there isn’t much more that can be said. All proposals received will be opened in Mid-August, and should one be selected a developer’s agreement will then be worked out over the next two months.
