STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — Governor Evers is issuing an emergency order banning price gouging of gasoline and diesel fuel in Wisconsin.
During a stop in Stevens Point on Tuesday, Evers says he doesn’t want to see convenience stores and others that sell fuel taking advantage of the current situation. “It’s putting people on notice that the Department of Ag, Trade, and Consumer Protection now has the ability to respond to and investigate complaints.”
He adds that he doesn’t think there is a widespread price gouging issue, but he does want those companies to know that if a complaint comes in DACAP will take it seriously. “It’s a matter of keeping the prices where they should be rather than too high.”
The average price of a gallon of regular fuel in Wisconsin was about $4.83 on Tuesday. Some stations in the Wausau area were as low as $4.60 for Unleaded 88, or E-15. The national average is $4.97.
The Democrat is also part of a coalition of Governors that have signed a letter to President Joe Biden regarding the rising cost of fuel. He says he was glad to hear that Biden is planning some kind of action on the matter, possibly as soon as this weekend.
“[I think we have] good momentum. As I recall he said he would have a decision on this by the end of the week, so we are looking forward to a positive outcome,” said Evers.
Evers adds price gouging for fuel shouldn’t be an issue, but if residents suspect someone is trying to inflate their prices they can file a complaint with DACAP.
The order will expire on December 1st.
