We continue our look back at the music of 50 years ago…..
This is one you probably didn’t hear back in the day…and it never gets played today on classic rock stations. It’s the British band Vinegar Joe and their self-titled dbut from 1972. And it’s a treat!
The band is funky and tight led by Pete Gage on guitar, Steve York on bass and a number of different drummers and keyboard guys. But the fun part of this band are the vocalists. The soulful Elkie Brooks (who had a number of really good solo albums later in the 70’s) and Robert Palmer ( yes, that Robert Palmer) who shows us the beginnings of his blue-eyed soul styings that would take him to the top of the solo charts in less than 10 years)
Here are some live performances from back in the day…
Those two tunes stand out on the record along with “See The World” and ‘Never Met A Dog”.
I read some reviews that compared them to the southern rockers in America including the Allman Brothers. They ain’t that. More like a tighter version of Delaney & Bonnie & Friends with Brooks wailing like Bonnie and Palmer crooning in his unmistakable style.
It’s sometimes hard to find some good early 70’s music that hasnt been played to death. This is one of them. I hope you can dig it.
