MADISON, WI (WSAU-WTAQ) — Wisconsin State Treasurer Sarah Godlewski is dropping out of the race for the Democratic nomination for US Senate, leaving Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes as the clear frontrunner in Tuesday’s primary.
Godlewski’s announcement came Friday, two days after Milwaukee Bucks Executive Alex Lasry dropped out of the race and four days after Tom Nelson suspended his campaign. Godlewski had previously stated she intended to stay in the race, but changed her mind just four days before the primary.
Lasry was considered a strong challenger to Barnes. Godlewski had been a distant third in most polls.
The current State Treasurer had campaigned on a platform of women’s rights and rural issues. She had also noted that she was the only candidate in the field to win a statewide race in Ron Johnson’s home county and several other GOP stronghold areas during her 2018 run.
Godlewski endorsed Barnes, and said in a written statement: “I’ll be on the campaign trail supporting Mandela, Tony, and all the Democrats on the ballot this November.”
Her campaign’s suspension means it’s all but certain that Barnes will challenge the incumbent Johnson in November.
