MADISON, WI (WSAU) — Former State Supreme Court Justice Michael Gableman is no longer on the state’s payroll.
Assembly Speaker Robin Vos announced Friday that he’s fired Gableman, whom he hired to lead an investigation into the 2020 Presidental election fourteen months ago. Back then Vos had expressed confidence in the former Justice, but as time went on their relationship grew frosty.
The major flashpoint was over whether the results of that election, which President Joe Biden won by about 20,000 votes, could be overturned; which they can’t. Vos had emphasized that the investigation should center on election security and defeating Governor Tony Evers this fall, who has vetoed election bills that Republicans support.
Gableman had accused Vos of “not wanting a real investigation” into the election and has also found himself in legal trouble for deleting items that have been the subject of open records requests.
The partisan probe into 2020 has cost Wisconsin taxpayers more than $1.1 million.
