The Green Bay Packers returned to work on Labor Day after an extended break from the conclusion of training camp. They last took the field on Wednesday.
Head Coach Matt LaFleur said he wanted to “knock the rust off” from the layoff and get the guys ready for Wednesday when the preparations for the 2022 season opener against the Minnesota Vikings will begin in earnest.
There was encouraging news regarding All Pro left tackle David Bakhtiari. LaFleur said he planned to give Bakhtiari some team reps for the first time, an indication he might be ready for the opener. He wasn’t so sure about Elgton Jenkins, projected to be the starting right tackle. When asked if they’ll debut at US Bank Stadium this weekend?, LaFleur said “you’ll have to wait ’till Sunday.”
Wide receiver Allen Lazard was the only player on the 53 man roster that didn’t take part in practice. He’s been out since last week but the Packers haven’t disclosed the nature of his injury. The first official injury report will come out Wednesday. LaFleur was also asked about Christian Watson and whether the second round pick is caught up and ready to contribute. He spent most of camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list. LaFleur said Watson continues to progress and they’ll play it by ear but hope to have him available for snaps this weekend.
Backup safety Dallin Leavitt continues to wear a red jersey at practice. He’s recovering from a shoulder injury suffered in the Pre-Season opener against San Francisco.
Mason Crosby was seen hitting a few kicks pre-practice, the first time reporters have witnessed kicking a football.
The media was only allowed to view a few minutes of individual drills on Clarke Hinkle Field, which is now the norm during regular season practices.
