WAUKESHA, WI (WSAU) — Despite having no legal training, Darrell Brooks will serve as his own defense lawyer when he stands trial Monday for accusations that he killed six people and injured dozens more during last year’s Waukesha Christmas Parade.
Judge Jennifer Dorow honored his request to release his attorney during a series of hearings last week which were contentious at times. According to Dorow he understands the charges against him and possible punishments but did admit that it is clear he suffers from mental illness.
Dorow also made it clear to Brooks that she will not allow him to keep any legal help on standby, and adds she won’t allow him to call in an attorney in the middle of the trial if he were to request one.
Jury selection will begin Monday. The proceedings are scheduled to run for about a month. Brooks faces up to six mandatory life sentences for the vehicular homicide charges alone.
