We continue our look back at the music of 50 years ago…..
Did you ever hear a band and go…these guys sound like (fill in the blank)? May I present Stealers Wheel fronted by the duo of Gerry Rafferty & Joe Egan.
Before he became a big solo star later in the decade, Rafferty along with Egan released a few decent albums as the band Stealers Wheel…but what makes it kinda interesting is how many different groups they channeled on this debut self-titled LP released in late 1972..
I can’t be the only one who, when hearing the single “Stuck in The Middle With You” come out of the radio for the first time, wondered about the new “Dylan” single. I thought that’s what it was.
And that’s not all. Among the collection of tunes come the beautiful harmonies of “Another Meaning” sounding like the Kinks or middle sixties Beatles. “You Put Something Better Inside Me” could have been an early 70’s Hollies tune. They even sound like Bad Company on Egan’s song “I Get By”.
Whether its the bass driven mellow vibe on “Next To Me” or the rockin, bluesy “Jose” or the total 70’s groove on “Outside Looking In”. the chamaeleon like tendencies of the band make you constantly looking for a comparison.
I liked their 1974 Lp “Ferguslie Park” better than this…but it’s a fun little record that has its charms.
