MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Wisconsin’s Democratic Governor Tony Evers and Republican challenger Tim Michels traded barbs over issues including crime, education, and state spending in their only debate Friday night in Madison.
Both candidates repeatedly worked to paint their opponent as “too radical.”
Michels attacked Evers over his record on crime.
“Crime went down in America from 30 years ago until two years ago,” Michels said. “I believe that’s a byproduct of the ‘defund the police’ movement.”
Evers says he’s supporting additional training and resources for police.
“It’s about providing the training and resources for the police to do the job, that needs to be what’s happening,” Evers said, saying his administration has spent $100 million on such efforts.
A Marquette Law School poll earlier this month showed the race nearly deadlocked, with Evers holding a 47-percent to 46-percent lead over Michels among likely voters.
