We continue our look back at the music of 50 years ago…..
For their second album in 6 months the James Gang delivered another set of meat and potatos rock with a funkier edge than before on the LP “Passin Thru”
It was the second album after the departure of Joe Walsh and once again features the soulful voice of Roy Kenner and guitar work of Domenic Troiano. They are backed by original members Dale Peters on bass and Jim Fox on drums.
The album also features some guest work From David Briggs & William Smitty Smith on keyboards, Charlie McCoy on harmonica and Weldon Myrick on pedal steel.
Its the last LP for Troiano who would be replaced by Tommy Bolin. While maybe not as talented as Walsh or Bolin, Troiano delivers some solid riffs on these songs especially on the more rockin side one cuts.
Some of the better stuff for me include “Had Enough” and “Up To Yourself”. “Everybody Needs A Hero” is a funky little surprise with some nice organ from Smith and piano from Briggs.
Side 2 slows things down and feature some nice blue-eyed soul vocals from Kenner.
The album doesnt stand out in any way…but it’s not terrible.
