The Badgers began their regular season on the road with an in-state matchup at UW-Milwaukee Monday night, and came home victorious. Wisconsin used stifling defense to jump to a 27-12 lead at the half and held on for a 58-49 win at the Klotsche Center.
Four Badgers scored in double figures, led by redshirt freshman Maty Wilke, who made her official Badger debut after missing all of last season with an injury. Fellow newcomer Avery LaBarbara had an impressive opening game in Cardinal and White, scoring 9 points with a game-high 10 rebounds.
Both teams got off to a slow start in the first period and the Badgers led 11-7 after the first 10 minutes. Serah Williams started off the game with a jumper and led with a game-high four points after the quarter.
Wisconsin’s offense started to pick up as they entered the second period, and a pair of three-point shots from Maty Wilke and Krystyna Ellew seemed to invigorate the Badgers. Whatever they may have lacked in offense they were able to make up for on the defensive end of the court. The team held Milwaukee to just 12 points on 20.8 percent shooting after two quarters, and forced UWM into 14 turnovers in the first half.
Free throws began to form the story of the third quarter for the Badgers, as eight of their 16 third-period points were scored from behind the line and UW maintained a 13-point lead, 43-30, heading into the final quarter.
The last period seemed to resemble the one prior, as the Badgers notched 15 points with seven coming from the free-throw line. Schramek contributed five of these free throws, which completed her 11-point performance on the night. Coach Marisa Moseley encouraged the Badgers to hold onto the ball and decrease their pace as the contest winded down, and they were able to finish out the game on top.
Wisconsin shot 31.8% (18-57) from the field, including 20.0% (4-20) from 3-point range. The Badgers were also 72.0% (18-25) from the free-throw line, which may have been the deciding factor in helping to secure a victory over the Panthers.
Milwaukee went 27.5% (14-51) from field-goal range, including 20.0% (4-20) from behind the arc. The Panthers were 17-21 (81.0%) from the free-throw line. Sophomore guard Angie Cera led her team with 11 points before fouling out in the final minutes of the game, while Grace Crowley added eight points of her own to go along with eight rebounds. Megan Walstad, who finished last year’s matchup with 21 points and eight rebounds, was held to just two points and five rebounds.
The Panthers out-rebounded the Badgers 41 to 39, but they were not as successful in terms of assists, steals, and turnovers. Wisconsin finished with 13 assists, and Julie Pospíšilová and Halle Douglass each contributed three a piece. The teams were equal in blocks with five, but Wisconsin prevailed in steals with 14 as opposed to Milwaukee’s three. Finally, the Badgers forced 22 turnovers while committing 16 themselves.
