MILWAUKEE, WI (WTAQ-WRN) – Midterm results were disappointing for Republicans, and former President Donald Trump is expected to announce he’s running again.
Former House Speaker Paul Ryan sees Trump as a problem for the party
“I mean, I think Trump’s kind of a drag on our ticket, I think I think Donald Trump gives us problems politically. We lost the house, the Senate in the White House in two years when Trump was on the ballot or in office. And I think we just have some Trump hangover. I think he’s a drag on our on our on our offices and our races.”
Ryan says Republicans need a presidential candidate who can appeal to what he calls the ‘rural Trump base,’ and suburban voters who don’t like the former president.
“We have sort of two bases in the Republican Party, sort of the rural Trump base, as you would describe it and a suburban vase that suburban base doesn’t by and large vote for Donald Trump. So we leave votes on the table if we want to him as our nominee.”
Ryan is not the only Wisconsin Republican who’s concerned about Trump’s negative impact on the party. Assembly Speaker Robin Vos last week called Trump “toxic” and said he has “turned off educated people.”
