We continue our look back at the music of 50 years ago…..
Prog music was all the rage across the pond in 1972. ELP, Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd and dozens of other bands were working the genre including a band from Oldham called Barclay James Harvest who released their fourth LP, “Baby James Harvest” in late ’72. It was more popular in England than here.
It was the usual format of layered guitars and keyboards with the band featuring two synth/mellotron, organ players, although most of the songs on this Lp were shorter than the norm.
They did spread out on a couple of ambitious tracks, “Summer Soldier” and “Moonwater” that don’t really work for me.
I did enjoy the guitar work of John Lees on much of this especially “Thank You”.
It’s nothing special unless you are a prog completist and want to listen to everything that was released in that style.
