ELDERON, WI (WSAU) — A 22-year-old person is dead after a stabbing and shooting incident in a home in Elderon.
Marathon County Sheriff Chad Billeb says his team received a call at around 2:30 AM from a 79-year-old man who said he was assaulted and stabbed in the face as he entered his home.
The unidentified man then produced a firearm and shot in the direction of the attacker, who was identified as a 22-year-old man. The attacker was able to get his hands on the weapon and fled the house after he was shot.
The 79-year-old then called 911 after the intruder left, and officers found the 22-year-old deceased in a car with a gunshot wound to the chest.
“At this time we do not believe there is any danger to the community, and we have detectives on scene who are actively investigating,” said Billeb. “Our detectives will be there for the better part of the day processing the scene.”
He adds they are treating the incident as a major crime scene.
The Sheriff couldn’t elaborate on the circumstances surrounding the shooting. That includes if the victim and the attacker knew each other, though he did say they don’t believe the two are related. Additionally, investigators are not ruling out the possibility that the incident was a home invasion.
The victim did receive medical treatment and is recovering.
Billeb provided an update on the incident to the media just before his swearing-in ceremony on Tuesday.
