WISCONSIN (WTAQ) — The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is reminding snowmobilers to operate within their limits and stay sober on the trails.
Last year Wisconsin saw 16 deaths related to snowmobilers not following the rules. Jake Holsclaw from the DNR said common reasons for accidents include operators under the influence of alcohol or drugs, going too fast for conditions, and operator inexperience.
Additionally, mother nature may present some challenges.
“We have very warm temperatures right now in the state,” said Holsclaw. “We have some ice loss happening and we want to encourage people to be safe on the ice.”
Snowmobile trails are often available due to the snowmobile clubs and private land owners that work together to provide access. Snowmobilers should make sure to be respectful by following posted trails and operating on the trails only when they are open.
There is still time to take DNR Snowmobile Safety courses; Anyone born on or after Jan. 1, 1985, who is at least 12 years old, must complete a snowmobile safety certificate in order to operate in Wisconsin. For more information on courses, click here.
Anyone with information regarding natural resource violations, including unsafe snowmobile operation, may confidentially report by calling or texting the Violation Hotline at 1-800-TIP-WDNR or 1-800-847-9367. The hotline is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Trained staff relay the information to conservation wardens. Reports can also be filed online.
