WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) – On Tuesday night, a 51-year-old Wausau man was injured after falling from his fourth-floor apartment after tying bedding together and attempting to jump out the window of the Landmark Apartments building.
According to a press release from the Wausau Police Department, the man was drinking and thought police were looking for him in the apartment building.
Officers responded to the Landmark Apartments building, 221 Scott Street, at 6:40 a.m. Tuesday for a 911 call from a resident. According to the press release from the Wausau Police Department, the caller reported his roommate had just fallen or jumped from their 4th-floor apartment window opening.
Officers arrived to find an adult male injured on the sidewalk area of Scott Street, as well as bedding materials tied together. EMS treated the male and transported him to Aspirus hospital. Officers discovered the 51-year-old male was on probation and had a warrant from the Wisconsin Department of Corrections after confirming his identity.
Following an investigation, it was determined that the man had consumed alcohol that morning and was expressing his belief that police were in the building looking for him. He used furniture to barricade the apartment door, made a makeshift rope by tying bedding materials together, attached it to an interior object, and attempted to exit the building through the roped bedding leading out the window.
After exiting the window opening, the bedding material broke and the man fell to the sidewalk, injuring him.
The injured man is still receiving treatment at Aspirus hospital and is believed to be in serious condition.
