It was an eventful second round of the NFL draft for the Green Bay Packers as General Manager Brian Gutekunst selected a pair of offensive weapons for new starting quarterback Jordan Love. With the 42nd overall choice, Green Bay took Oregon State tight end Luke Musgrave. He’s a big target at 6-5 and 250 but has plenty of speed, even on a mended knee that he injured two games into his junior season last fall. His numbers were pedestrian compared to the other tight ends on the board but the Packers, and many scouts believe he might have the most upside of the group. He finished with 47 catches for 633 yards and two touchdowns with the Beavers. Musgrave told reporters Friday night he had surgery to repair a torn medial collateral ligament and even against his doctor’s advice, took part in the Senior Bowl in January. Musgrave is a native of Bend, Oregon.
Gutekunst then traded down twice, first with Detroit to drop three spots from 45 to 48 but picking up an extra pick in the 5th round (159 overall). He then moved down two more places to number 50 in a deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to gain an additional 6th round pick (179). He finally zeroed in on Michigan State wide receiver Jayden Reed at number 50. A 5-11, 185 pound slot sized receiver but with excellent speed (4.37 40 at his pro day). Reed caught 203 passes for 2866 yards and 26 touchdowns as a Spartan. HIs best year was in 2021 with 59 catches for 1026 yards and 10 scores. He’s a versatile receiver who can work both inside and outside and he can simply run away from coverage. Reed hails from Naperville, Illinois.
Packers Co-Director of Player Personnel Jon Eric-Sullivan met reporters in the Lambeau Field media auditorium to talk about the second round offensive weapons.
Reed will wear number 1 for the Packers, believed the first player to don that jersey number since Curly Lambeau while Musgrave will wear number 88.
Two Wisconsin Badgers were selected in the second round. Center Joe Tippman was the 43rd overall choice taken by the New York Jets. The Badger just might be Aaron Rodgers’ new snapper in New York and defensive tackle Keeanu Benton was the 49th overall choice, taken by the Pittsburgh Steelers.
