GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) – The Packers have not closed the door on bringing back popular veterans Mercedes Lewis, Adrian Amos, and Mason Crosby.
The Packers introduced their 12-player undrafted rookie class and assigned numbers to those players on Monday in addition to revealing the numbers that their 2023 NFL Draft class will wear. With 88 players now on the roster, Lewis’ (89), Amos’ (31), and Crosby’s (2) jersey numbers continue to be up for grabs.
However, there is still no word on whether or not these players will decide to come back to the Packers after the draft. On Day 3, Green Bay selected tight ends Luke Mugrave and Tucker Kraft, making it more difficult for Lewis to get playing time in the future. Because the Packers were one of three teams to select a kicker in the draft when they used a 5th round pick on Anders Carlson, Crosby would probably have to fight for a spot during training camp.
The safety position is relatively open because Green Bay didn’t choose a safety until the seventh round when they selected Anthony Johnson Jr who many believe could be a very productive player for this team immediately.
GM Brian Gutekunst weighed in on re-signing Mason Crosby back in March saying, “We would never close the door. We’ll see where that goes,” Gutekunst said. “He had a good year this past year. We’re limited a little bit financially, but would never say never.”
Lewis has received interest from other teams. The New York Jets and Las Vegas Raiders are considered to be the most likely landing spots for Lewis but according to reports he is not interested in signing with the Jets due to the tax rate in New York/New Jersey.
The Baltimore Ravens also met with and hosted a workout for Adrian Amos back in March but left without a deal.
Even after the anticipated extension of Rashan Gary’s contract, cap expert Ken Ingalls estimates that the Packers’ cap room is currently at -$1 million. This means to re-sign with the team in 2023, these players would have to accept a deal that is near the league minimum.
