GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) – The Green Bay Packers are adding some veteran depth to their secondary. The team announced on Friday that they’ve signed former Houston Texan Jonathan Owens, according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston.
Owens started 19 of his 36 games during his time with Houston. He has recorded 143 career tackles over the last three seasons in addition to one career sack and one career interception. Despite playing 283 defensive snaps and 1,150 special teams snaps over his career, Owens didn’t commit a single penalty while starting all 17 games for Houston last year.
He had a strong Week 1 performance against the Indianapolis Colts last season, making 15 tackles and knocking away a pass in the end zone to keep his team in the game. The game ended in a 20-20 tie.
Last month, Owens notably married 25-time world champion Simone Biles, the most decorated gymnast in the history of the Gymnastics World Championships. The two have been together since 2020.

For the Packers, there are several unanswered questions at safety. Currently, it seems like Dallin Leavitt, Anthony Johnson, Rudy Ford, and Darnell Savage will be on the roster. That makes four players, not counting Tarvarius Moore, who many anticipate will also make the team because of his special teams and defensive experience. Outside of Savage, Owens has the most starting experience and has a solid shot of making the 53-man roster.
