WAUKESHA, WI (WSAU) — A man already serving life in prison for killing his mother in Langlade County will face another sentencing hearing in August for unrelated charges in Waukesha County.
Derek Goplin will return to a Waukesha County courtroom on August 3rd for a plea and sentencing hearing related to charges of neglecting a child and exposing his genitals to a child. The latter charge is a Class I Felony punishable by up to 3.5 years in prison.
The 39-year-old was found guilty of killing Susan Reese during an argument in her Antigo home in October 2021. Her body was found the next day during a welfare check.
Goplin was immediately named a person of interest and was taken into custody a few days later in southeastern Wisconsin.
The case was sealed by a Waukesha County judge while legal proceedings tied to the homicide case were worked out to keep the accusations from tainting the jury pool. Charges were unsealed after the guilty verdict was returned in February.
Goplin was originally scheduled to be sentenced for those charges today.
