WASHINGTON DC (WSAU) – After reportedly slamming through security barriers in Lafayette Square, close to the White House, on Monday night, the driver of a U-Haul is now facing numerous charges.
Secret Service communications head Anthony Gugliemi said just before 10 p.m. on May 22, authorities detained the driver of a U-Haul truck after he struck barricades close to the White House.
According to Karol Markowicz of the NY Post, the driver has been identified as 19-year-old Sai Varshith Kandula, an unnamed law enforcement official also told CBS News that he is a citizen of the United States. Kandula allegedly threatened President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris after entering Lafayette Square.

According to CNN, Kandula was detained and charged with trespassing, damaging federal property, operating a vehicle carelessly, and assault with a dangerous weapon, according to Park Police. He is also accused of making threats to hurt, abduct, or kill the President, the Vice President, or a member of their family.
Although authorities removed what seems to be a Nazi banner from the truck, bomb technicians meticulously examined the vehicle and discovered no explosives or incendiary devices, CBS reported.
Some have questioned why the supposed evidence found in the vehicle was spread out in such a way that it looks to allow the media to snap “shock and awe” photos.
Along with the Secret Service and Park Police, the National Capital Response Squad of the FBI is conducting the investigation.
