Oh the joy of the Lord!
With an out of this world impressive 61-1 record and a 53-game winning streak, the Oklahoma women’s softball team won their third straight women’s softball national championship a few weeks ago. They also became the first team in history to lead the nation in hitting, pitching, and fielding. They scored the most runs, gave up the fewest, and fielded the ball better than anyone else.
Beyond the amazing wins, records and fantastic athletic abilities of these young women, I am so inspired by their faith. They give me hope for the future of this country.
Several of these athletes are devoted Christians who boldly share their faith, following the example of their head coach Patty Gasso.
As FaithIt reports: “Gasso regularly glorifies God for His many blessings. Gasso credits God with changing her mindset years ago, shifting the focus from winning softball games to winning souls. ‘You open the door and let them in; I’ll take over from there,’ was God’s message to her.”
During a post-game press conference, ESPN’s Alex Scarborough asked three of the players how they handle the “day-in, day-out pressure of their winning streak and maintain their joy throughout it all.” What is particularly noteworthy about the reporter’s 2,700-word article in describing Oklahoma’s incredible season was the omission of any specific references to the Christian faith of the coach and players. Although frankly, I’m shocked that ESPN didn’t cut the camera off during their impassioned comments.
Extraordinary.
The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him. – Psalm 28:7
