Julio Rodriguez established a major league record for hits over four games while the Seattle Mariners repeatedly delivered with two outs en route to their 10-3 victory over the host Houston Astros on Saturday.
Rodriguez went 4-for-6 with singles in the fourth, sixth and eighth innings, giving him 17 hits over the past four games. Milt Stock held the previous mark with 16 over a four-game stretch for the Brooklyn Robins in 1925.
Seattle improved to 13-3 over its last 16 games and clinched its seventh consecutive road series by beating scuffling Astros ace Framber Valdez. He fell to 2-4 with a 5.82 ERA over his last nine starts after surrendering six runs on 10 hits.
The Astros managed two solo home runs off Mariners right-hander Logan Gilbert (11-5), who allowed eight hits and one walk with three strikeouts over six strong innings. Alex Bregman and Yainer Diaz recorded their 20th and 17th homers, respectively, in the third and fourth. Mauricio Dubon homered in the ninth.
With a single to left in the fifth inning, Houston second baseman Jose Altuve joined Astros Hall of Famers Craig Biggio and Jeff Bagwell as the only players in franchise history to record 2,000 career hits. Altuve did so in his 1,631st game and finished 3-for-5.
Red Sox 8, Yankees 1
Kutter Crawford pitched six outstanding innings, while Luis Urias hit a grand slam and Connor Wong a two-run homer off ace Gerrit Cole as visiting Boston routed struggling New York.
The Red Sox beat the Yankees for the sixth straight time and lead the season series 7-1 thanks to Crawford’s stellar outing and the unlikely offense from their eighth- and ninth-place hitters.
Crawford (6-6) allowed five baserunners and no-hit the Yankees for 5 1/3 innings until Aaron Judge homered for the second straight game. The right-hander struck out five and walked two.
Dodgers 3, Marlins 1 (Game 1)
Austin Barnes tied the score on a safety-squeeze bunt, then Mookie Betts drilled a go-ahead two-run single — both in the eighth inning — as host Los Angeles rallied to beat Miami in the first game of a doubleheader.
Ryan Yarbrough (6-5) earned the win in relief, pitching two scoreless innings. Evan Phillips pitched a scoreless ninth for his 19th save in 21 tries this year.
Marlins rookie Eury Perez was brilliant in a no-decision as he struck out a career-high 10 and walked none in six scoreless innings. Perez showed why he was one of baseball’s best prospects entering this season, allowing just two hits and striking out seven different Dodgers.
Dodgers 3, Marlins 1 (Game 2)
Mookie Betts slugged two solo homers, leading host Los Angeles past Miami in the second game of their twin bill. The Dodgers, who have 13 of their past 14 games.
Betts has 34 homers this season, including three in this series. Josh Bell homered for Miami’s only run in Saturday night’s game.
Julio Urias (11-6) earned the win, allowing just five hits, no walks and one run in seven strong innings, lowering his ERA to 4.15. He is 4-0 with a 1.44 ERA this month. Brusdar Graterol dodged a threat in the ninth to pick up his sixth save. Braxton Garrett (7-4) took the loss, allowing five hits, no walks and three runs in six innings.
Braves 6, Giants 5
Eddie Rosario capped a 4-for-4 night with a two-run homer in the eighth inning, and host Atlanta snagged its fifth straight victory by coming from behind to knock off San Francisco.
Rosario’s 19th home run of the season helped Atlanta extend its record to 5-0 on its nine-game homestand. He finished the night with three RBIs, and Ronald Acuna Jr. also homered. Kirby Yates (7-0) picked up the win in relief, and Raisel Iglesias earned his 24th save.
Rosario’s blast came off reliever Tyler Rogers (4-5), who took the loss for San Francisco. LaMonte Wade Jr. hit a game-opening home run for the Giants.
Orioles 7, Athletics 2 (10 innings)
James McCann drove in three runs, two with a 10th-inning single as part of a five-run uprising, and Baltimore outlasted host Oakland for its second consecutive win in their three-game series.
Ryan Mountcastle had an RBI single, Jordan Westburg a sacrifice fly and Austin Hays a run-scoring infield out in the 10th before McCann, who had homered earlier in the game, landed his two-run single in front of A’s left fielder Esteury Ruiz to give the Orioles a five-run cushion.
Felix Bautista (8-2), who worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth to preserve a 2-2 tie, was credited with the win. Adrian Martinez (0-1), Oakland’s fifth pitcher, took the loss, with two of his five runs allowed going as unearned. Aledmys Diaz hit two homers for Oakland.
Cubs 6, Royals 4
Cody Bellinger homered twice and had four RBIs and Justin Steele allowed two runs over six solid innings in Chicago’s home win over Kansas City.
Bellinger homered with a man on in the first and added a solo shot in the third. The Cubs won their sixth straight game started by Steele (14-3), who allowed six hits without a walk. He struck out seven.
Kansas City’s Bobby Witt Jr. had three hits with an RBI but struck out against Adbert Alzolay as the tying run in the ninth. Alzolay picked up his 17th save. The Royals had 10 hits but went 2-for-15 with runners in scoring position.
Diamondbacks 6, Padres 4 (Game 1)
Tommy Pham broke a 3-3 tie with a two-run home run in the fifth inning, leading Arizona past host San Diego in the first game of a day/night doubleheader.
Pham’s homer off Padres’ spot starter Matt Waldron followed a one-out walk to Ketel Marte. It was Pham’s second decisive two-run homer of the series and his sixth in two seasons against the Padres, a former team.
Merrill Kelly (10-5) held the Padres to three runs on five hits and four walks with three strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings. Paul Sewald picked up his 26th save when Juan Soto flew out to the warning track in left with the bases loaded for the game’s final out.
Diamondbacks 8, Padres 1 (Game 2)
Gabriel Moreno hit a grand slam and drove in five runs and Arizona got a strong performance from its bullpen in finishing a doubleheader sweep of host San Diego.
Bryce Jarvis (1-0) earned his first major league win after allowing one run on two hits in 3 2/3 innings of relief. Peter Strzelecki and Justin Martinez then combined to allow just two hits over three scoreless innings to put the finishing touches on the victory.
Christian Walker and Corbin Carroll each had three hits for the Diamondbacks, who have won five of their last six games. Xander Bogaerts hit a solo shot for San Diego, and Padres starter Yu Darvish (8-9) surrendered four runs on nine hits through five-plus innings. He walked one and fanned seven.
Phillies 12, Nationals 3
Trea Turner homered twice during Philadelphia’s eight-run eighth inning in the victory over host Washington.
In between Turner’s homers, Bryson Stott smacked a three-run shot. Turner became the third player in Phillies history to hit two home runs in the same inning and the first in 38 years.
Riley Adams drove in two runs with a pair of two-out hits, but the Nationals had a three-game winning streak snapped and lost for the second time in their last eight games. Cory Abbott (1-2) allowed all eight runs in the eighth and took the loss.
Pirates 7, Twins 4
Andrew McCutchen homered and drove in five runs and Mitch Keller allowed two runs on seven hits over six innings as Pittsburgh defeated Minnesota in Minneapolis.
Keller (10-8) picked up his first victory since June 28. He finished with 12 strikeouts, one off his career high of 13 set May 14 at Baltimore. David Bednar, despite giving up an RBI single to Jorge Polanco in the ninth, picked up his 26th save.
Polanco finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run for Minnesota. Sonny Gray (6-6), despite throwing 5 1/3 perfect innings to start the contest, took the loss, allowing four runs on four hits over 6 2/3 innings.
Angels 7, Rays 6 (Game 1)
Brandon Drury went 3-for-4 with what proved to be the decisive home run as Los Angeles edged Tampa Bay in the first game of a doubleheader in Anaheim, Calif.
Angels starter Chase Silseth lasted just 3 2/3 innings, giving up five runs on five hits. Rays starter Tyler Glasnow (6-4) went six innings and was responsible for seven runs (five earned) on eight hits.
Josh Lowe went 3-for-4 with three RBIs for Tampa Bay. Jonathan Aranda added a solo home run that pulled the Rays within one run in the sixth.
Rays 18, Angels 4 (Game 2)
Right-hander Zach Eflin got his American League-best 13th win and Harold Ramirez went 4-for-6 with four RBIs as Tampa Bay routed Los Angeles to split a doubleheader in Anaheim, Calif.
Randy Arozarena and Isaac Paredes had three hits apiece and Tampa Bay sent nine batters to the plate in a four-run fifth inning, and 10 batted in a seven-run sixth. In six innings, Eflin (13-7) allowed one run on four hits and one walk while striking out four.
The Angels’ Brandon Drury hit his 17th homer of the season, a three-run shot, in the eighth to give him homers in both games. Hunter Renfroe also went deep for the Angels. Patrick Sandoval (6-10) took the loss.
Brewers 6, Rangers 1
Freddy Peralta struck out 11 and Willy Adames had four hits, leading visiting Milwaukee past Texas.
The Brewers have won the first two games of the three-game series to improve to 10-7 this month. The Rangers have lost three straight and are 4-5 since an eight-game winning streak.
Peralta (10-8) allowed one run on four hits and two walks while striking out 11 over 5 2/3 innings. The right-hander is 5-1 with a 2.68 ERA in his last eight starts, a span in which he has recorded four double-digit strikeout outings.
Blue Jays 4, Reds 3
Davis Schneider’s go-ahead solo home run in the fifth inning after Toronto scored three runs in the fourth, was enough to defeat host Cincinnati.
Toronto rebounded from Friday’s series-opening 1-0 loss to get its seventh win in its last 10 road games. Chris Bassitt (12-6) earned the victory, going six innings and giving up three hits and three runs (two earned), with six strikeouts. Closer Jordan Romano had the first two Reds batters reach in the ninth, and after getting the first out, had them on second and third. But he retired two straight batters to quell the threat for his 30th save.
Reds rookie left-hander Brandon Williamson (4-3) went 5 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out six. TJ Friedl homered and Elly De La Cruz doubled and tripled for the Reds.
Tigers 4, Guardians 3
Kerry Carpenter hit a three-run homer in the first inning to help Detroit edge host Cleveland in the third game of their four-game series.
Javier Baez also homered and Spencer Torkelson had two hits, two walks and a run for the Tigers, who have won three of four overall, including two of the first three in the weekend set.
Detroit starter Matt Manning (5-4) picked up the win after he allowed two runs and five hits in six innings. He struck out two and walked one.
Mets 13, Cardinals 2
Daniel Vogelbach hit a grand slam and Pete Alonso added a two-run blast as New York flattened St. Louis for its sixth win in seven games.
DJ Stewart went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs and Francisco Lindor went 4-for-5 with three runs and an RBI for the Mets. Starting pitcher Kodai Senga (10-6) held the Cardinals to one run on two hits and two walks in seven innings.
Nolan Arenado hit a homer for the Cardinals, who lost their fourth straight game. St. Louis starter Miles Mikolas (6-9) allowed seven runs on seven hits, including two homers, in 4 2/3 innings.
Rockies 11, White Sox 5
Charlie Blackmon homered among his two hits, Elehuris Montero had three hits and four RBIs, and Colorado beat Chicago in Denver.
Brendan Rodgers and Nolan Jones had three hits apiece, and Kyle Freeland (5-13) earned his first win since May 14 for Colorado. He allowed four runs on eight hits and struck out six in five innings.
Luis Robert Jr. homered and finished with two hits, and Elvis Andrus, Lenyn Sosa and Carlos Perez also had two hits for Chicago. Starter Jesse Scholtens (1-6) allowed five runs on five hits and five walks in three innings.
