MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WRN) – A Dane County resident has contracted the year’s first human case of West Nile virus in Wisconsin.
A state Department of Health Services press release on Friday did not identify the person, or where or when they contracted the mosquito borne virus. But state Health Officer Paula Tran said it’s a reminder that even as summer winds down, we still need to take precautions to prevent mosquito bites.
On average, 17 Wisconsinites contract West Nile virus annually, according to DHS. Most people do not get sick, but people who have weakened immune systems are at the greatest risk for serious illness.
