GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) – As the Packers were making roster moves yesterday they were working to find a way to trade for a former Wisconsin Badgers star.
According to sources who spoke to ESPN, the Green Bay Packers were in negotiations with the Colts about star running back Jonathan Taylor and had a real interest in making a trade happen.
After its self-imposed deadline of Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET passed without the team receiving what it deemed to be an acceptable offer for Taylor, who requested a trade last month and was given permission by the Colts last week to look for a trade partner, Indianapolis decided to move forward.
Additionally, a source informed ESPN that Taylor is still a target for trade talks and that the All-Pro would be open to one. The deadline for NFL trades is October 31.
Three running backs, including veterans Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon as well as undrafted rookie Emanuel Wilson, are listed on the Packers’ initial 53-man roster as of yesterday.
Jones, 28, is under contract until 2024 but agreed to a pay cut of $5 million this offseason. This season, the 2020 Pro Bowler will earn $11 million, including a $8.52 million signing bonus given at the time of his restructuring. Jones is set to earn $12 million next season, but none of it is guaranteed. Dillion is also in the final year of his rookie contract.
