MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WRN) — Robin Vos is asking former members of the Wisconsin Supreme Court for guidance on the possible impeachment of Justice Janet Protasiewicz.
The Republican Assembly Speaker said that he is not ‘foaming at the mouth’ to impeach Protasiewicz – and would rather not impeach at all.
“I am asking a panel of former members of the state supreme court to review and advise what the criteria are for impeachment,” said Vos. “And to be able to go to the next step of this process if we’re not able to determine an off path.”
Back in August, Marquette University School of Law Professor Chad M. Oldfather provided the Wisconsin Law Journal with a written response with more details of the impeachment process in Wisconsin.
“The Wisconsin Constitution provides the state assembly with the power to impeach ‘all civil officers of this state for corrupt conduct in office, or crimes and misdemeanors.’ If a majority of members of the assembly vote in favor of impeachment, it moves to the state senate for trial, which requires a 2/3 vote to convict. The (recent) election of Dan Knodl to the state Senate gives the Republicans a 2/3 majority in the state senate, and thus creates the possibility of the use of the impeachment power in a partisan way,” Oldfather said.
Vos did not say which former members of the court will be on the review panel.
Republicans want Protasiewicz to recuse from redistricting and abortion cases because of what she said during her campaign.
