MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WRN) — Lawmakers heard more about the state’s efforts to combat human trafficking at a hearing in Madison on Wednesday.
Jake Jansky with Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI) says most traffickers aren’t simply kidnapping people, they’re getting to know their victims over weeks and months.
“Immediately that child becomes immersed in that life,” said Jansky. “That trafficker knows exactly what to do, what to say, how to keep them involved, get some a cell phone potentially to have direct communication with them.”
Jansky serves as the head of human trafficking investigations at the state justice department.
The DCI has been working with the department of public instruction to keep better track of truancy and potential runaways, who are often those being brought into trafficking situations.
