WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. Representative Matt Gaetz, a Republican, will file a motion to remove Kevin McCarthy from his post as Speaker of the House, CNN reported on Sunday, citing an interview with Gaetz.
According to ABC News, Gaetz stated that he could secure enough votes before the 15 rounds of voting that it took McCarthy to win the gavel, even while he conceded that he might not yet have enough support to remove McCarthy from the speakership via a so-called motion to resign.
McCarthy’s removal would effectively put a stop to all legislative activity in the House until a replacement is chosen. It’s still unclear whether Gaetz would need more than a few votes to make such a dramatic change. McCarthy has ruled out the possibility of a request to vacate.
