MADISON, WI (WSAU) — Seven different Badgers scored as Wisconsin thrashed MSU Mankato 9-0 on Friday, giving Head Coach Mark Johnson his 600th career victory.
Kristen Simms and Maryanne Picard each scored twice for the Badgers. Britta Curl, Casey O’Brien, and Lacey Eden also scored.
Katie Kotlowski and Caroline Harvey rounded out the scoring. Kotlowski’s tally was her first of the season.
Freshman Ava McNaughton earned her first career shutout in net by making 12 saves.
Wisconsin won Thursday’s game 6-0, meaning they’ve taken the first two games of the season from the Mavericks by a combined score of 15-0. The Badgers improved to 6-0-0 and have outscored their opponents 54-6.
Johnson now owns a record of 600-113-53 in 20 seasons at the helm. Before taking over the Badger women’s program, he served as an assistant for the men’s team. He also served as the head coach for the USWNT during the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, which took him away from the Badgers for one season.
Wisconsin will wrap up a six-game homestand next weekend hosting Bemidji State for two games Friday and Saturday.
Meanwhile, at the Icebreaker tournament in Bemidji, the Wisconsin men battled back from a 3rd-period deficit to score a 4-3 overtime win over the Beavers. Lucius Cruz scored twice including the game-winner in the extra frame. Simon Tassy and Joe Palodichuk also scored in regulation.
Kyle McClellan earned the win in net with 16 saves including four in the OT.
Wisconsin will travel to Grand Forks this morning for a game against North Dakota later tonight. UND scored a 7-2 win over Army on Friday.
The Fighting Hawks and Beavers serve as co-hosts for the Icebreaker. BSU will play Army later tonight.
