DAIRY NEWS – Making the transition from managing cows to managing people requires learning new skills. Presented by Professional Dairy Producers® (PDPW), Dairy Managers Institute® features three tiers of training that give today’s dairy managers the skills and confidence they need to build and lead successful teams.
“Many herd managers enjoyed their work a whole lot more before they also had to manage people – the people part of the job is hard!” said Shelly Mayer, dairy farmer from Slinger, Wis., and executive director of PDPW. “The PDPW Dairy Managers Institute will help you become the manager other people want to work for.”
The two-day workshop will be held Dec. 12-13, 2023, at PDPW Headquarters in Juneau, Wis. The program will run from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 12 and again from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 13. Simultaneous Spanish translation will be offered for all sessions.
Each attendee will select one of three successive tiers of programming:
- Tier one: Lead and manage with insight
Dr. Becky Stewart Gross, PhD, president and founder of Building Bridges Seminars, will set the stage for leadership success with practical strategies for managing change. Attendees will learn to recognize the differences between the skills of a manager and those of a leader, and when each is most effective.
- Tier two: Master the art of coaching
Michael Hoffman, founder and owner of Igniting Performance, Inc., will bring his bold energy and enthusiasm to help attendees build their coaching skills and deliver meaningful feedback. They will learn how to generate a greater sense of ownership and involvement with team members and secure commitments to an action plan.
- Tier three: Nail the financials and negotiations
Dr. Kevin Bernhardt, PhD, agribusiness professor at UW-Platteville and farm management specialist with UW-Extension and Center for Dairy Profitability, and Linda Swindling, JD, CSP, will help participants master financials and negotiations while sharpening their business acumen. They will explore negotiation styles and how to calculate break-even marks and cost-benefit analysis to make the best deals for your business.
