MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) – Rumors continue to swirl around major league baseball that Craig Counsell may be quickly approaching a deal to become the next manager of the New York Mets.
According to SNY’s Andy Martino, The Mets have received permission to interview Craig Counsell for the manager job. Brewers had initially indicated they would not grant it, and Counsell’s contract would have to expire. They have changed course, and the Mets will be interviewing him soon.
Martino also reported Craig Counsell would “welcome the challenge of coming to New York if he and the Mets proved to be a fit.”
The Mets fired manager Buck Showalter earlier this month, and they are now looking for a new manager after hiring former Brewers GM David Stearns as their President of Baseball Operations.
Martino also said the Mets “plan to conduct a wide-ranging manager search” and won’t “automatically anoint a particular candidate.”
According to Jon Heyman of The New York Post, people close to Mets owner David Stearns believe he is serious about considering first-time managers if he can’t entice his veteran manager Craig Counsell away from Milwaukee.
One Brewers source believes Counsell will stay if he receives a raise of $3.5 million. Terry Francona and Bruce Bochy were the highest-paid managers in 2023, with salaries ranging from $4 million to $4.5 million.
Since taking over as the Brewers’ manager in 2015, Counsell has overseen a 707-625 record for the team. In five of the past six seasons, Milwaukee has made the postseason, but they haven’t made it to the NLCS since 2018.
The Brewers’ contract with Counsell officially expires on October 31.
